The story of Mohawk Rubber Sales of New England started late in 1932 when Max Stone received a credit line of $150 from The Mohawk Rubber Company at the request of Dan Ahern, Mohawk's regional manager. Max began selling re-liners, patches, boots and repair materials. At the outset he did not have an official office or warehouse, working out of desk space generously provided by Dan Ahern and The Mohawk Rubber Company. In fact, his first "office and warehouse" was the back room of a neighborhood store in Boston. The space measured 10' X 16'. In that first year, Stone grossed $6500.
The growth of Mohawk rubber Sales is attributable to the unique relationship between Max Stone, Dan Ahern and his family and The Mohawk Rubber Company. This relationship lasted and thrived though the years. From 1932 to 1941, Dan Ahern and The Mohawk Rubber Company worked closely with Stone and saw Mohawk Rubber Sales of New England grow. In 1941, when The Mohawk Rubber Company decided to stop producing tires, Dan Ahern, who had earlier married and employee of the Mohawk Rubber Company's New York Office, joined Max Stone. Before long the efforts of these two men had built their firm to a top position as an independent distributor of tread rubber, repair materials, and the tire shop tools and equipment. Dan Ahern passed away in 1957. His son Bob Ahern finished his tour of duty with the U.S. Navy and joined the firm as office manager.
With continued growth, the company moved to South Boston where a complete line of tire equipment and supplies could be housed along with the largest inventory of tread rubber in the northeast. In 1961, Bob Ahern established Mohawk Tire Equipment Sales, Inc. with members of Max Stone's family employed at Mohawk Rubber Sales. The new company was established to develop a buy-out of this growing distribution operation.
When Max died in 1964 everything was in place to establish the continuing business with new ownership. Throughout the years Bob Ahern and his associates have continued to build on the efforts of Max Stone, Dan Ahern and their fellow workers.
In 1981 corporate headquarters were moved to Norwell, Mass, continuing as one of the Northeast's prime suppliers of retread rubber and re-treading equipment. Gradually as the number of independent retread shops diminished, the company placed greater emphasis on the sale of automotive equipment.
In 1991 Pat McGeoghegan and his son Brian, a recent Boston College graduate, purchased the Mohawk team keeping the business a 'family affair. Pat is well known in our industry and has a long-term record of successful selling.
In 1999 Mohawk Rubber moved once again to its present location in Hingham, Ma. It now has over 12,000 sq ft of warehouse and office space and employs around 32 people. They have salespeople located covering all of New England, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Long Island, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. The territory covered by Mohawk is virtually the entire east coast and with the major customers that Mohawk has acquired, they serve stores located in other areas of the country.
The story of Mohawk Rubber Sales of New England, now in it's 70th year and still growing, is the story of faith, trust, cooperation and service. It was the faith of Dan Ahern in Max Stone that launched the business in the midst of a depression. It was the trust of Max Stone and Dan Ahern in one another that made the business prosper. It was the cooperation of The Mohawk Rubber Company of Akron that supported the New England firm through the early stages. Most of all it was the record of superior service to its customers that assured the company of its past growth and offers the best assurance for its future.
Bob Ahern, Sr. summed up the story of Mohawk Rubber Sales by saying: "We have always conducted our business as a family. Our contractual relationships were minimal. We worked together and trusted on another. We treated our customers with the same family feeling that we had in our company. That has been our secret to success; and, as we work more closely with the McGeoghegan family, that will be the key to our success in the future."
